Remembering the Creator: Embracing the Gift of Each Day

Big Idea

Remembering the Creator fosters a lifetime of joyful moments.

Memories hold a profound influence over our lives, shaping our perspectives and emotions. Think back to historical events like the Kennedy assassination, Roe v. Wade, or the Challenger explosion—moments etched into our minds. Memories not only evoke emotions but also propel us into action. In the tapestry of recollections, the Book of Ecclesiastes beckons us to remember, urging us to consider the value and purpose of each day.

The Significance of Each Day (Eccl 11:7-8):

The Teacher reminds us that life is a precious gift, akin to the sweetness of honey. Each day, as the sun graces our eyes, is an opportunity to savor life's goodness. Yet, in our anticipation of future milestones, we often overlook the beauty of the present. The Teacher implores us not to squander time, emphasizing that darkness will eventually dim the sweet light. Life is fleeting, urging us to rejoice in every moment.

Enjoyment as a Divine Gift (Eccl 11:9-10):

As the Teacher turns attention to the young, the message resonates across all ages. Enjoyment, he declares, is a gift from the Creator God. This gift is not to be postponed until we reach certain milestones—paying off debts, completing education, or achieving career goals. The Teacher challenges us to follow the inclination of our hearts, to relish the present without letting circumstances steal our joy.

However, he cautions against unrestrained pleasure, emphasizing the boundaries within God's plan. A thought-provoking question arises: will we be judged on our ability to enjoy God's gifts? The balance lies in responsible pleasure, avoiding exploitation and wastefulness.

Rejoicing in the Creator God (Eccl 12:1-8):

The Teacher underscores the importance of remembering our Creator God. As life progresses, difficulties arise, and physical abilities wane. Despite these challenges, there is a call to rejoice. In the face of inevitable aging, the Teacher encourages us to enjoy life and find joy in our Creator.

Reasons for rejoicing are threefold:

  1. Difficult Days Ahead (Eccl 12:1a): Life becomes more challenging as we age, making it crucial to find joy in our Creator amid difficulties.

  2. Fading Abilities (Eccl 12:2-5): Physical and mental strength diminish with time, yet our ability to rejoice in our Creator endures.

  3. Numbered Days (Eccl 12:6-8): The Teacher highlights the inevitable end of our earthly journey, urging us to rejoice before that day arrives.

Practical Application:

  1. True Joy through Salvation: The foundation of genuine joy lies in knowing Christ as our Savior.

  2. Transforming Complaints into Thanksgiving: Instead of dwelling on complaints, focus on the greatness of God and express gratitude.

  3. Finding Joy in the Sunset Years: Even in the later stages of life, start with thanksgiving in prayer to reshape your perspective.

  4. Youthful Rejoicing (Eccl 11:9): Young individuals are commanded to rejoice in their youth, embracing each day as valuable.

Call to Action:

As we gather in fellowship, the Teacher's wisdom urges us to express our rejoicing practically:

  1. Joyful Giving: Embrace the opportunity to give back to the Creator God through offerings.

  2. Praising God: Take note of praise and thanksgiving, spreading joy and gratitude among fellow believers.

In conclusion, let us heed the Teacher's wisdom, creating powerful rejoicing memories each day. Memories are potent, and when anchored in the joy of our Creator, they become a testament to a life well-lived.
