Trusting God for Tomorrow
What will the Wall Street Journal headlines be tomorrow? Will the S&P 500 index rise or fall? Will I wake up healthy or ill? Will I encounter a personal tragedy or experience a remarkable blessing?Ask any conceivable question about tomorrow and there is only one right answer. "I don't know." And this is more true than I realize.I have plans - and so do you, I trust. If you're doing really well, you have specific plans. You've written down goals and prioritized them. You've scheduled some appointments and prepared for them. And you've set your alarm to be sure that you don't get behind from the beginning. (Then again, maybe the batteries in your alarm clock will die and the alarm won't sound!)But for all of this planning and anticipation, you still don't know a single thing about what will happen tomorrow. You may feel like you do, but you really don't know anything.James the Apostle affirms this when he writes, "Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away (Jam. 4:14)."And Solomon also affirms this when he writes, "Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth (Prov. 27:1)."If you are a student of the Bible, here is an amazing fact. You know more about the future kingdom of Christ and what heaven will be like than you do about tomorrow. Think about that.How should you respond to your ignorance and lack of knowledge? The answer is very simple. Trust God. Before you close your eyes in sleep, consciously turn over your plans for tomorrow to the Lord's tender care. Let Him know that if He changes your plans, you accept that already. Let Him know that you are excited to see what He is going to do. Let Him know that you expect He will do some very significant things. And thank Him in advance. And whatever it is that worries you and causes you to fear, give that to Him - give all of it to Him.Peter the Apostle affirms this when he writes, "Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you (1 Pet. 5:7)."Christ knows what is on the horizon for tomorrow, in every detail. Yes, He knows what is going to happen anywhere in the entire world tomorrow - whether at the bottom of the Mariana Trench or the peak of Mount Chimborazo. Whether at the busiest spot in New York City or the quietest spot in the Canadian boreal forest. He knows everything that will occur and is in full control of the situation. You can rest in that. You can rest in Him.Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof (Matt. 6:34)."I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety." (Psa. 34:8).Good night and rest well.
